Many parents are surprised when the dentist refers their young child to our office. The earlier we see a child - the sooner we can help them develop a better smile by intervening as their permanent teeth are erupting. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be evaluated for interceptive treatment as early as age 7.
Early treatment may be necessary when you see:
- Upper front teeth protrude
- Lower front teeth protrude
- Upper and/or lower teeth are crowded
- Teeth do not fit properly together
Another purpose of early treatment is to correct skeletal problems. This correction of the jaw will allow better development and guide permanent teeth to a more desirable position.
This early stage of care is known as Phase I orthodontic treatment, and treats kids aged 6-12 who still have baby teeth, or a mixed dentition of baby and permanent teeth. We can lessen the severity and future effects of malformation by delivering retainers (click here to see our many color options), arch expanders or other appliances that can correct specific problems.
- Patient may not need further treatment when older. If they do need braces in their teenage years, treatment will be easier and should take less time.
- Early interceptive treatment lets us control the child’s growth so he/she can develop more ideally.
- Improves the relationship of the upper and lower jaws, allowing for more desirable future development.
- Could possibly avoid the need for extractions of permanent teeth or oral surgery.
